Five students from Mbita Boys High School were knocked down by a speeding personal vehicle on Wednesday, April 2, in Mbita town, Homa Bay County.

The students were heading home for the April holidays when the speeding vehicle lost control and hit them.

According to reports, the students were walking near the Mbita International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) when the incident occurred.

The injured students were quickly taken to Homa Bay County Level 5 Hospital, though initial reports suggest that two of them may have succumbed to their injuries.

Eyewitnesses claim that the vehicle was moving at a high speed, and there are suspicions that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol when he struck the students.

Videos and images circulating on social media depicted the vehicle with extensive damage.

This tragic incident came just hours after another accident on Wednesday morning, where more than ten students from Ober Boys Boarding were involved in a crash along the Sondu-Katito highway.

The accident took place around 6 a.m. when a 14-seater matatu, transporting students to Kisumu city, lost control and crashed into a stationary truck carrying sugarcane.

A police report confirmed that four people, including three students, were killed instantly, while the injured were taken to Nyabondo Mission Hospital for treatment.

Nyakach OCPD Laurinus Odinga confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on a sharp bend, and there were no warning signs indicating the truck had been parked along the highway.

Odinga further explained that two students and the conductor died at the scene, while a third student passed away while being rushed to the hospital.

The bodies of the deceased were transported to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital, where they are awaiting identification and a postmortem examination.
